Mountain pastures below mighty mountains above the Soča valley represent a remarkable economic, social and cultural heritage. Some of them are as old as the settlements in the valley. The mountain pastures below Krn are mentioned in the Oglej documents as early as the 12th century. Here the cheese makers and shepherds transfer the knowledge of their ancestors and the ancient laws of economy and social behaviour from generation to generation. The architectural heritage of shepherd settlements and stables is of great ethnological value. Sadly, the buildings were irreparably damaged in the Soška fronta maelstrom and by earthquakes later. Visits to some of the mountain pastures still in operation are possible with a local guide.
